The Stonewall Law Association of Greater Houston (SLAGH) is a non-profit bar association founded in 1990 as the Bar Association for Human Rights of Greater Houston. It's purpose is to promote the study and understanding of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and HIV law. Members include attorneys, law professors, law students, local lawmakers, and others interested in GLBT/HIV law. As an organization, SLAGH is committed to education, networking, and community participation for the betterment of the GLBT/HIV Community. SLAGH is a member organization of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association, which is an Affiliate member of the American Bar Association. The State Bar of Texas has approved SLAGH as an Accredited Sponsor of continuing legal education (CLE) courses for attorneys. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE Each month, SLAGH offers 1 hour of CLE credits to its attorney members. The CLE Luncheon courses are held on the first Thursday of each month at a local restaurant. The fee is $15 for members, $10 for students, and $20 for non-members. The cost of the CLE also includes a three-course meal with beverage and desert! info@slagh.com. Also, check our calendar for updates. Each year, SLAGH offers a full day of CLE (approximately 7 hours) at its Annual Alternative Family Law Seminar. The first conference in 2002 was held at South Texas College of Law's new state-of-the-art law library. In 2003, the seminar was held at the University of Houston Law Center. The next seminar will be held in the early Spring 2005 at a location to be announced. At these seminars, several top attorneys present various cutting edge issues in family law affecting GLBT persons, along with practical solutions for common and uncommon problems. Attorneys across the state and nation have attended. info@slagh.com This organization also offers education to the general public through its annual Community Law Day. Several Stonewall Law attorneys and judges offer a half-day of free courses designed to education the public on the legal issues that affect us all, and how to protect ourselves. The next Community Law Day will be held on October 9, 2004 at a location to be announced. NETWORKING Each month, SLAGH offers at many opportunities throughout the year for its members to network with each other.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SLAGH is very involved in Houston's GLBT community. SLAGH works with several local and national organizations to education and inform the Houston GLBT/HIV Community. SLAGH is a member organization of the Greater Houston GLBT Chamber of Commerce. In 2002, SLAGH entered into a cooperative agreement with the Southeast Texas Legal Clinic to provide education and resources for persons with HIV/AIDS, and to refer clients to the appropriate services. Each year, as part of Houston's GLBT Pride Week, SLAGH hosts Official Pride Events and participates in the Pride Parade, including our very successful Official Pride Event, First Annual Community Law Day. |
